The effect of diabetes on health is serious and prolonged. But new figures have emerged that show the levels of hospitalisation for children by diabetes .
According to recent figures, some 3,300 young people in the UK were hospitalised due to their condition in the last 12 months. Diabetes UK, the leading charity for diabetes in the UK, described the figures as a shock.
The chief executive of Diabetes UK, Douglas Smallwood, was reported in the diabetes news as commenting: "The number of children being rushed to A&E with such life-threatening complications is shocking. With increased awareness and education and more investment from the NHS in special paediatric diabetes care, the number of emergency admissions could be dramatically reduced. Action must be taken now to improve the quality of life for our children."
